Brother Wins Big at Global Packaging Awards

Brother International’s sustainable pulp packaging has won a WorldStar Award at the hotly contested WorldStar Global Packaging Awards 2025.

The WorldStar Competition was started by World Packaging Organisation in 1970. It is one of the world’s leading awards for packaging design, innovation and manufacturing. There were more than 550 entrants from 40 countries.

Brother’s proprietary moulded pulp cushioning is much easier to recycle and better for the environment than earlier versions. It was first introduced in New Zealand in 2022 and resulted in the elimination of approximately two Olympic-sized swimming pools worth of expanded polystyrene (EPS) in that year.

The pulp is paper-based and reduces CO2 emissions during production. It is also 33% lighter than previous packaging and has enabled entire boxes to become 7% smaller, improving transport efficiency and associated emissions.

Its compact, lightweight design does not compromise on toughness. It has a time-proven ability to withstand the challenges of global transportation, as demonstrated by Brother’s own drop impact analysis; innovatively developed by Brother engineers specifically to assess the effect of packaging on dropped cartons. The innovative shape of the cushioning allows it to be scaled up or down for different sized and shaped devices.

“This is yet another example of Brother’s commitment to sustainability, that ultimately benefits our customers. Good packaging is not just about protecting packages, but doing it with minimal impact on both the planet and the size of the package,” said Brother New Zealand managing director Warwick Beban.

“As businesses and individuals look ever deeper into the environmental impacts of their activities, including across their entire supply chains, I’m proud to say Brother sets the standard for innovation and sustainability in our sector."

“The broader challenge is to take it further to eliminate unnecessary plastic production. The solutions are there. Wouldn’t it be something if every manufacturer that shipped products with plastic packaging like EPS was committed to changing?”

Watch the video below to see how Brother’s award-winning sustainable pulp packaging is helping eliminate EPS and set a new standard in environmentally responsible design.

From Reducing EPS to Eliminating EPS

Brother’s packaging is engineered to protect products during global transport by ship, air, and land. Traditionally made from expanded polystyrene (EPS), our cushioning has evolved into a more sustainable paper-based solution. This new design maintains strength and shock absorption while reducing plastic waste and environmental impact.
